Children Society

In a world where many children are still being abused, neglected, or face difficulty in life, Singapore Children Society offers protection to many of these children. They offer guidance and support to help kids grow in a safer and nurtured environment.

Children’s Society, founded in 1952, is an older singapore-based welfare charity protecting children, and is now operating in over 10-12 centres throughout singapore.

Children’s Society offers four main areas of help: Vulnerable Children & Youth, Children & Youth Services, Family Services, and Research & Advocacy. The first area, Vulnerable Children & Youth, offers protection and support for children who have experienced abuse, neglect, or family crisis through shelter, counselling, and rehabilitation. On the other hand, Children & Youth Services provides educational programmes, recreational programmes, and development to help younger people grow into independent and confident individuals. Family Services strengthens the bonds of families by offering financial aid and counselling to help families live more comfortably and safely. Lastly, Research & Advocacy focuses on academic issues that are child-related and improves child welfare by advocating for policy changes in Singapore.

They also operate in a range of fitted programmes. Kaki Learn (https://www.childrensociety.org.sg/kaki-learn) helps with children’s homework, speaking, science, reading, and general activities for children. Children Outreach helps school children with social and personal issues such as their parents being imprisoned. RoundBox is a youth centre that uses arts and sports to create responsibility and leadership in children. Sunbeam Place is a residential home that is safe for neglected children aged 2 to 21, aiding them with rehabilitation and familial reunification.

All of these programmes are made with a main, set goal: to bring relief and happiness to children in need all around the world and to advocate for their well-being. Moreover, other goals include providing secure and comfortable environments for neglected and vulnerable youths using direct services. Lastly, they are also ensuring families are well supported to reduce disadvantaged childhood outcomes that prevent success or growth.

Before investing, their mission is clearly centered around children. Meaning most donations they recieve will be invested directly in children welfare services, their education, support for families, and public support. Futhermore, this charity is not particularly a small charity, but, it is a well-established and is transparent about how it operates. They have also won a Charity Transparency Award (https://www.instagram.com/p/DCqT_oYhig9/), and an award for their social awareness (https://www.childrensociety.org.sg/sunbeam-stories/society-receives-award-for-social-consciousness/) , also winning the President’s award for social impact (https://www.childrensociety.org.sg/sunbeam-stories/recognised-for-social-impact/index.html), as well as much more. However, one thing to note down is that, even when operating in 10-12 service centres, they have limited physical reach internationally, where their impact is meaningful but localised within Singapore.

On the other hand, it is worth investing in this charity as your donations would support their services in protection, education, counselling, rehabilitation, and advocacy. They are a trusted as well as a transparent charity, with clear annual reports and records including direct outcomes. Many programmes, such as the Sunbeam Place, have a great individual impact. For example, they provide neglected children a secure and comfortable environment to develop and grow.

FINAL ALTRUISM LEVEL : 9/10

Since this charity is not necessarily a small charity, it is an experienced and impactful charity that focuses on the health and welfare of children and youth in need. They have many goals that are meaningful and have many diverse programmes that focus on children, centred on making them succeed and have a smoother childhood. However, its final altruism level is a 9 since their concern is centred primarily on children and youth within Singapore, and not internationally. Their variety of audience is small and specific.
